Sleeping Giant Gallery will be hosting a 2 week exhibit in the month
... of November featuring over 200 artists from across Ontario.

The idea behind this exhibit is to create a different outlook on the
way art purchasing is portrayed and actually sell art "By the Pound".

Sleeping Giant will be transforming the entire gallery into a "meat market" with
counters, meat scales and a butcher station.

All art submitted must be done on either a standard gallery canvas
1.5 inches in depth or standard store bought wood panel also 1.5 in
depth ( so all material weighs the same )

Each artist can submit up to 3 pieces to this exhibit. Art will be
sold "by the pound" and placed on a meat scale with a set price per
pound. Prices will vary based on weight per pound, but as it stands
right now we are looking at somewhere around $250/pound.
Pieces can weigh less than a pound.

SG is accepting all forms of art so long as it's done on the above
materials, photography will be accepted as well.

Art can be purchased and taken on the spot and our "meat packers" will
be on site to package the works.

SG will also have a "sample station" where prints of work will be
available for purchase ( picture a salad bar where you would purchase
fresh salad, but instead it's prints ). All prints will be sold by the
gram.

Every artist submitting is required to pay a $20 hanging fee to secure
their place in the exhibit and that allows you to submit up to 3
pieces ( each no bigger than 2feet x 2feet )

Anyone interested in selling prints will pay an additional $5 fee and
can submit up to 30 prints of their work on any size/quality paper.
Remember prints are weighed by the gram.

Exhibit will run 2 weeks, with an opening reception organized by the
gallery with live music, food and drinks, as well we will have
multiple employees running the different stations taking care of sales
and gallery sitting for the 2 weeks the show is up.

sleepinggiantbythepound@gmail.com including full name, # of pieces
submitting ( 1-3 )

The project and social experiment at 52 McCaul is coming to a
close. What was meant to be a 2 month experiment, touched the
(he)arts and culture community and sparked a 7 month run.

While they loved having you all as guests and are sad to have to
depart, it is the nature of all projects to come to an end. Well & Good
are excited to re-focus our attention (away from leaky buildings
and unnecessary expenses) to Well and Good's ongoing efforts to
bring greater support and wellness to the community. They look
forward to welcoming you again and again in venues and
neighbourhoods throughout the city and country.

Join Well & Good to celebrate this milestone at 52 McCaul Street this
Saturday August 7th for the extravaganza LOVE ME TENDER:
A celebration of eclectic music and art!  The event will begin
at noon and run until 1 am.

What makes this event so special, other than closing out our run
on McCaul Street, is that we will be featuring an innovative way
for savvy art lovers and budding collectors to buy original
artwork at a fraction of the price.

It's a terribly exciting moment when you purchase a piece of
original art and we encourage everyone to try it. And with Love
Me Tender we're making it easier than ever.

HOW IT WORKS is that you buy a "tender" for a chance to win the
art you desire. The tender is a ticket, like a raffle ticket.
Each piece of art has a limited number of tenders attached to it
to be sold so that the odds remain high that your tender will win.

What's more important is that each tender is like a share in Well
and Good and the artist who created it. A portion of every tender
goes toward what we do as an organization producing presenting
art and culture we believe in (more on that below) but the
biggest chunk of it goes to the artist. These tenders mean that
the artist can earn market value from their work, grow their
audience and survive a little longer to evolve creatively. But
we need the whole community to help support by investing and
spreading the word to fellow art lovers & culture supporters.

Freedom Fighter Skateboards has teamed up with Well and Good to have
this year's Disposable Art show titled "Another Disposable Art show" at
52 McCaul.

This year we wanted to focus on homegrown talent. We
are featuring 35 artists from across Canada with over 40 decks being
done. This is a silent auction fundraiser to help raise money for Free
Skates to help build skateboards for youth here and abroad that would
normally not have the means to do so themselves.

BACKGROUND
The billboard tax has been passed but zero new money has been invested in beautifying or democratizing access to public spaces with art in the 2010 Budget. This goes against highly favourable public opinion polls by EKOS (2009) Environics (2007) and Pollara (2005) and a 4500 person petition, 60 endorsements by organizations and reams of city plans to build a successful Toronto for the long-term. City councillors from across the political spectrum have also been very supportive of a billboard tax to fund art in committee, council and the press. Similarly, public consultations, staff and consultant's reports stated that the purpose of the tax was to support arts and city beautification projects.

We are not really sure what happened, however the budget has not passed yet. It's time to get a bit pissed -- then get smart and help correct this mistake by coming to the town hall. It worked to get the tax. It might just work to take it back!

Skate4Cancer In New Zealand & Australia: Press Release

Originating in 2004, Skate4Cancer is a not for profit grassroots organization that raises awareness of cancer, primarily targeting a youth demographic. We operate by skateboarding the width or length of a country (whichever is longest) in order to draw attention to our cause. Once that is accomplished, we promote a variety of campaigns that focus on healthy and preventative lifestyles ranging from self-breast examinations to healthy eating.

After covering the majority of North America, they’ve decided to take on the world. Beginning in early January, S4C be skating from Auckland to Dunedin. That means skateboarding the entire distance between the two cities, along the winding New Zealand roads. After that, S4C will head to Australia to face one of the biggest challenges yet! Skating downunder in the heat of the Aussy sun, and facing off against every obstacle the infamous continent is famous for.

Their website ( www.skate4cancer.com) offers a comprehensive detailing of our mission, history as well as other important information. Currently, the most vital tool for their cause is publicity. If S4C can gather attention, they can mobilize young people and start saving lives.

Roadsworth: Crossing The Line

52 McCaul is pleased to present, in conjunction with Loaded Pictures, Roadsworth: Crossing The Line, a documentary detailing the Montreal artist’s clandestine campaign to make his mark the on the city streets.

Hailed as an “artist’s artist” by Wooster Collective, Roadsworth began to play with the language of the streets, overlaying city asphalt markings with his own images: a crosswalk becomes a giant boot print, vines choked up traffic dividers and electrical plugs filled parking spots. Each piece begs the question, Who owns public space? As he is prosecuted at home and celebrated abroad, Roadsworth struggles to defend his work, define himself as an artist and address difficult questions about art and freedom and expression.

Our good friends at Control Skateboards are doing their part to help Haiti and we're helping spread the word.

St-Nicolas, Qc January 18th 2010 --In an attempt to come to the aid of the people who are suffering in Haiti in the aftermath of a violent earthquake that brought death and destruction to the country last week we have decided to release a special edition skateboard. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these boards will go to the people of Haiti via the Canadian Red Cross - Quebec division, c/o Fabienne Laisné, 6, Place du Commerce, Verdun (Quebec) H3E 1P4. This board will go on sale across Canada within the next 2 weeks. This board is made out of 100% hardrock Canadian maple at the Control Manufacture in St-Nicolas Qc Canada. The project however is from our sales team. We will use all the contacts we have built over the last 15 years to reach out to all shops, brands and skaters across Europe, Canada, USA and South America that currently buy boards from us.

Not a penny will be kept of the proceeds, everything we make is going to Haiti.

Frustration and communication, Images and Inefficiency, Hopelessness and the process by which we create; only a few of the messages conveyed in the vast array of work shoveled out by Brian Rideout. In his very first Toronto solo exhibition, Rideout is on the attack, attempting the impossible and making it look effortless. Discovering and conveying some very basic truths about humanity, himself, and the things one does and contributes to the world. Rideout sees his paintings as still lifes, as studies, investigating the ideas and concepts that surround everyday life and the thought provoking/wholly changing realizations and understandings one has about the function of humanity. Contextualizing his efforts to evoke specific meaning that at first glance seems devoid and juvenile in its outright caddy playfulness, Rideout intends his work to have an aggressive and fearless accessibility that's entry point will encourage the viewer to re-play and re-observe.

Rideout's eye is fixed and it sees a living apocalypse, over-run by the pop and the consumable, never able to escape a history written by people adored for being dead or dying. Honesty is his tool for representation and without it Rideout feels lost, this is how he survives amongst the ocean of over-stimuli that is the landscape of an excessive and superfluous new world.

Mixing sculpture, painting, and drawing, Brian Rideout's new body of work speaks specifically to his frustration with the structures that have recently established a contemporary history of painting and visual culture - the now inefficient nature of communicating with images. Settling his work within the context of pop culture and the everyday, Rideout's reading of his productions is suggestive in nature, like trying to picture the two worlds of boxing and painting having a fling (a straight-up unabashed fling) that's working and struggling to create 'sport' and coming out easily interpreted as frivolous and gratuitous . Much like seeing violence in sports, like boxing, and relating it to the lack of apparent reason, cause, or justification of art making. The desire to create new meaning in a world seemingly devoid of it is Rideout's pathos.

Brian Rideout is a New Jersey born, Canadian resident that graduated from Georgian College in 2007 with a focus in drawing and painting. Soon after moving to Toronto in the summer of 2008 he was the recipient of the prize for best painter at the Toronto Out Door Art Exhibition.

After a slight hibernation on the blog we bring news!
This past Sunday, was awesome as expected as we were fortunate enough to participate for the second year in the Manifesto Festival. We met two very talented artists know as, OMEN and PERU from Montreal and chilled with Trevor from Dialogue Headwear. We looked on at yet another SMOLIK masterpiece consisting of painted skateboards which, are to be auctioned for charity as well as, a few boards done by MG's own Alan Wood. The charity auction will be hosted by our good friends at Freedom Fighter Skateboards. Check out their website for full details about the auction.

In more recent news... Alan and SMOLIK just finished another collaboration at The Clothing Show in Toronto. Also, they are among a HUGE list of other great artists for an upcoming event supporting a great cause which is to be hosted by Well and Good.

Your involvement with this initiative will enable Youthlink and Well and Good to continue in their efforts to help those in need through the benefits of art.

Toronto, ON – August 20, 2009 – Once in a while music, art, culture and technology collide in a way that opens up unique possibilities and shifts consciousness – a catalyst for creative evolution and social change. Get ready Toronto - MANIFESTO returns for their Third Annual Festival of Community & Culture from September 16th – 20th! Toronto will host events around the city with live musical performances, art exhibitions, a film festival, a professional breakdance competition, workshops, an artists’ market and a massive after party showcasing local, national and international artists in the hip hop community.

Event highlights for this year’s festival include the Manifesto Film Festival that will debut a secret cinema in the heart of the city; the high energy, crowd-pleasing Canada Pro Bboy Championship that will see top crews from across North America battle for a $5,000 cash prize; a 3-floor Art Exhibition featuring top notch, cutting edge artists in graffiti, street art, design, illustration, photography and new media with guests that include Montreal’s Roadsworth and world-renowned street artist NUNCA from Brazil; two block parties spotlighting GTA-wide community talent at the Parkdale Youth Festival and 106 & York Urban Arts Festival, a Featured Party with special guest and superstar producer 9th Wonder, the dual-venue Manifesto After Party with special guest DJ’s to be announced; and of course the festival’s Main Event – a FREE family-friendly day of arts and music at Nathan Phillips Square that escalates into an epic outdoor concert, this year featuring a rare free performance by headliners and hip hop royalty Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as REFLECTION ETERNAL! The Main Event also includes the “Freshest Goods” market where young designers and collectives sell merchandise and gain exposure; “Know Your Craft” workshops including capoeira, hand drumming, breakdancing, DJing, and a variety of other art forms; a 70-foot mural painted live throughout the day by Toronto’s cream of the crop, and an open collaborative mural and community dance floor for those itching to get involved!

More special guests are being added to the Manifesto Festival 2009 lineup. The final lineup will be announced by September 8th.

Judging
Each age group will be judged out of a score of 10 points
1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest.

Qualifying
Each skater gets two 1 minute runs
The judges then will combine the two scores for a total of one score.
The skaters with the highest scores will advance to the finals
10 to 15 skaters will advance to the finals from the original roster of each age group.

Finals
The remaining finalists will get two 1 minute runs
The judges will combine the two scores for a total of one score.
The winners of each age group will be the skaters with the highest scores from their final runs.
Each age group will have 1st, 2nd, 3rd placing.

Prizes
- 1st place for Men's Open
A round trip to Vancouver to be entered into the semi- qualifying of the DAMN AM series.
